Home again, home again! We went away for Thanksgiving and when we returned home, I found a package of Soapnuts from NaturOli in my mailbox. Great timing, seeing I had laundry from our trip.
Soapnuts are very unique, and frankly, when I saw them, I really doubted they would work as a cleaning agent for my laundry. After all, what can something that grows on a tree have in it, that will actually clean? My doubt was set to rest after the first load of laundry. I actually tried them out on my daughter's stuffed animals, instead of clothes. I wanted to see what would happen and since one of the kids had spilled something on the toybox full of stuffed animals and they smelled musty, I figured it'd be a good test.
I was surprised that the musty smell was gone and that the stuffed animals were soft, without fabric softener! It seems that the saponin in the soap nuts, truly is an effective cleaning agent - but without any residue chemicals left over.
It works by putting 5 to 7 soap nuts in the muslin bag they come with, in the washer. I actually experimented first, by wetting and rubbing the bag over my hands as the washing machine filled with water to see if it sudsed up. It's really amazing. It does suds! The shell contains the saponin which helps facilitate cleaning just as synthetic detergents do.
For those that wash with cold water, the soap nuts must be fully saturated first, in a cup of warm or hot water. This helps release the saponin in the nuts, and while cold water will do that, hot water will speed this process up. NaturOli also provides directions for how to use the soap nuts to make a laundry powder as well as for hand-wash only items.
These soap nuts are not long lasting. They only last for 5-7 loads and then, they need to be replaced. Still, when you consider that a 1 lb bag for $18.95 does 160 loads or a 2 lb bag of these, at $28.05, will do 320 loads, they are not only a green, chemical-free alternative to laundry, they are also an economic alternative!
